What this unit covers
Taking away from numbers up to 10 is built up in order: subtracting within 5, subtracting within 10, then subtracting 0. Besides Calculation and Fill in the Blank, Word Problems (with Pictures) ask what is left in a picture, and Word Problems in words only extend the work to reading a take-away situation.
Mixing up 7 - 0 and 7 - 7 and answering 0 for both stands out. In Fill in the Blank, children add the two visible numbers instead, giving 13 for 9 - □ = 4. If the answer is larger than the number being subtracted from, no subtraction has taken place.
