Teaching a Child to Tell Time — Getting Past "The Long Hand Is on 3, So Why Is It 15?"

"The long hand is pointing at 3 — how many minutes?" "Three!" This is the classic first stumble when a child starts learning to tell time.

I assumed at first that it was carelessness. It isn't. A clock is the first genuinely difficult scale a child meets in math.

The cause: two scales overlaid on one face

The "3" on the face means "three o'clock" to the short hand and "fifteen minutes" to the long hand. The same numeral means something different depending on which hand you're reading. This is the first double scale a child encounters.

On top of that:

  • The minutes for the long hand aren't written on the face at all (you count in fives)
  • At 4:58 the short hand is almost on the 5, so it reads as "5:58"
  • Everyday words — half past, to, past — have to be mapped on as well

The difficulty is layered several deep. Not trying to teach it all at once matters.

Japan's Ministry of Education takes that ambiguous short hand on directly. Its commentary on the national curriculum guidelines for elementary mathematics (2017) says it matters for children to grasp that the short and long hands move together, and to connect the time to daily life — as in "it's past eight, but it isn't yet nine when the first lesson starts" (Grade 1, Measurement). Schools don't try to do this with face-reading drills alone either.

How to teach it at home

Step 1: spend a while reading only the hour

Start with the long hand on 12 — o'clock times only. "The number the short hand points to is the hour." That much is readable before first grade. In daily life: "Snack is at three — keep an eye on the clock."

Step 2: add "half past"

The long hand on 6. "Short hand between 3 and 4, long hand on 6, so half past three." This is where the sense of "the short hand is partway through" first arrives.

Step 3: count in fives, before the times tables

Reading the long hand means counting 5, 10, 15, 20… Practise pressing each numeral in turn with a finger while counting. Sticking up a small chart — "1 is five minutes, 2 is ten minutes" — helps too.

Step 4: "how many minutes until…" comes last

Reading 4:50 as "ten to five" is a conversion adults pause over. Bring it in only once the basic reading is stable, through everyday remarks like "ten minutes until five."

Making it part of daily life

In a house with only digital clocks, the chance to practise never comes up. Put one analogue clock at your child's eye level and the day itself becomes the practice. Asking "what time is it?" two or three times a day is enough. That's all "connecting the time to daily life" needs to mean at home.

How to practise

  1. Grade 1 content is in Telling Time, with clock-face problems in graded order
  2. For "what time is it 30 minutes later?", use Elapsed Time; for problems crossing noon or midnight, Elapsed Time (AM and PM)
  3. Grade 2's Time and Duration is mainly about the difference between a point in time and a length of time. That's a language barrier as much as a math one — a single line before the worksheet ("a time is a place, a duration is a length") makes it go down better

Frequently asked questions

Q. By what age should they be able to read a clock?

A. It's taught in grade 1, but this topic varies a lot between children. If the face is fluent by the time elapsed-time calculations arrive in grade 3, you're fine. Increasing everyday exposure works better than hurrying.

Q. Isn't a digital clock enough?

A. For daily life, yes. But the feel for "how much longer" and "in thirty minutes" grows more easily from watching hands move as a continuous quantity. Elapsed-time problems are also far easier with a mental image of the face.


This is a topic decided less by how many worksheets you do than by whether there's an analogue clock in the house. Even if it isn't there yet, more glances at it will close the gap.
