Reading the hour from the short hand and the minutes from the long hand is practiced as two separate skills. What Time Is It? (O'Clock) settles times on the hour, 5-Minute Intervals moves to counting the numbers by fives, and 1-Minute Intervals follows the tick marks one by one for finer readings.
The first error is reading the long hand as 4 minutes when it points at 4, since the shift to counting by fives has not happened. When the short hand sits between 2 and 3, many children read the nearer 3 and answer three o'clock, so the time comes out an hour ahead.
Reading a clock is a skill this unit introduces for the first time. It draws on the counting ability built up through number and calculation so far, and once a time can be read, it becomes the material for comparing two times in Elapsed Time, and eventually leads into Time and Duration in both grade 2 and grade 3.
