- Constant Sum or Difference
Word problems bring scenes of two people sharing something, and scenes such as a difference in age that never alters. Constant Sum also brings shapes where the perimeter of a rectangle drawn on grid paper is fixed. Together with Constant Difference, a box and a circle are written out in a table, an expression is made, and several figures are then tried in the box.

Where a rectangle has a fixed perimeter, answers appear with that length written straight into the expression as the sum. Under Constant Sum the box and the circle add to the same figure in every column of the table, and that figure is the whole quantity where something is being shared, or half the perimeter for a rectangle. Under Constant Difference it is the figure left by subtracting that stays level.
Laying two quantities in a table and saying their relation in one expression is what this lesson establishes as the way into the unit. Changing by the Same Amount follows a relation that grows by a fixed amount each time one more figure is added, using the same table and expression.
