- How to Compare
Two containers of water are set against each other and the one holding more is named. Comparing Directly shows containers of the same shape but different sizes with the water at the same level, while Comparing by Pouring shows identical containers with only the height of the water differing. No figures appear in either; looking at the picture is all that decides it.

Take the height of the water as the only clue and Comparing Directly gives the wrong result, since the levels match and both are declared equal. Width is what counts there. Comparing by Pouring reverses the trap: the containers are the same, yet a difference in width is searched for and the work stalls.
Ordering by Capacity turns the task from weighing up two containers into putting three in order. The two ways of looking that were kept apart here carry over unchanged once three are involved.
