Two pencils drawn one above the other are compared and the longer one is chosen as A or B. Both are drawn with their left ends on the same vertical line, so how far the right end reaches decides the matter entirely, which is exactly the Comparing Directly format. No ruler appears, and a single act of looking gets to the answer.

Overlooking the aligned left ends, children settle on whichever pencil lies on top. Placing a finger on the left-hand line and running the eye across to the right end settles it. Even when the longer one has been identified, the labels A and B get swapped and the opposite letter is written down.
What is being dealt with shifts from numbers to the size of things in plain view. This unit holds only this one lesson, and in Comparing Capacity the thing being measured against moves one step further again, to the amount a container will hold.
