Word problems join one figure to another, one at a time. Connected Triangles tracks the perimeter, Connected Squares the height and width added together, and Sticks the number of sticks, each written into a table against the count of figures and then expressed. Word Problem Type has no drawing and the relation has to be read out of the sentences alone.

Every expression in this lesson carries an added figure alongside so many times the box. In Sticks the first square takes four sticks and three more come with each one after, yet an expression multiplying by four gets written and the second entry in the table is put down as eight. When the value for a box of 2 comes out as twice the value for a box of 1, the added figure has been left out.
This lesson turns the eye on how much is gained with each figure added. Constant Sum or Difference followed relations where a sum or a difference held still. Here a rise of one is mixed with a rise of three as in Sticks. Change by 2× and 3× drops the added figure and leaves an expression of multiplying alone.
