- Subtracting a Mixed Number from a Whole Number
The number being subtracted from stays whole while the number taken away becomes a mixed number. The working finds the difference of the whole numbers first and then deals with the borrowing on the fraction side. The word problems remove an amount used from a whole and ask what remains, and in the boxed items the whole number being subtracted from becomes the box.

The whole-number part of the answer comes out one below the difference of the whole numbers. Move to the boxed items without noticing that and the box gets whatever the answer's whole number and the taken-away whole number add to, which lands one below the right figure. Subtracting the mixed number again from the figure put in the box brings that gap out.
In Calculations with 3 Fractions the count of numbers rises from two to three and adding and subtracting are mixed. Borrowing one from a whole number, which has run from Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Fractions to this lesson, is used there too on the way to an answer.
