Here the arrangement is fixed the other way round, subtracting first and adding afterwards. Reversing the order of the signs makes the figure reached halfway dip before it climbs again. That dip and climb is confirmed in Calculation and followed through Fill in the Blank and Word Problems.

The act of taking away carries over and the addition at the end gets subtracted too. Any result smaller than the figure left by the subtraction shows that something meant to be added was taken away instead. Skipping the halfway figure and calculating from the two numbers at the ends also occurs.
Nothing has changed but the order of the signs, so the procedure and the way of checking match Add, Then Subtract. These two lessons settle how an equation is read, and from Addition with Carrying the arithmetic itself becomes a step harder.
