- Stopwatches and Seconds
A stopwatch face is what gets looked at. One shape has the answer written in Seconds Only and the other in Minutes and Seconds, and how many seconds one full sweep of the hand stands for has to be read off the marks. No expression appears; everything is observed.

In the minutes-and-seconds shape, answers turn up with the seconds written and the minutes dropped. Where the minute hand has moved beyond zero in the figure, an answer without that figure has lost it. Because the two shapes stand side by side, what a given figure is asking for has to be reread every time.
Reading a face ends with this lesson. Units (Minutes and Seconds) has no pictures at all and moves to restating one read figure as another. Counting marks is put down for good at this point.
