- Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator
Fractions above one now stand on the side being subtracted from. Calculation leaves the denominator alone and takes the right-hand numerator from the left. Fill in the Blank puts a numerator in the box and Word Problems asks for a quantity reduced, and every answer in Word Problems settles below one.

Once a fraction above one is mixed in, it looks as though both numerator and denominator have something to be taken from, and answers survive with the denominator underneath subtracted as well. The size of one part does not change when something is taken away, so the denominator of the answer is the very figure standing in the expression. A different figure underneath means the wrong thing was moved.
The hand that moved numerators alone in Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator has passed straight into the subtracting direction. From Addition of Mixed Numbers a whole-number part joins the expression, and it gets moved separately from the fraction side.
