The number being subtracted from is always 1. In Calculation and Word Problems the whole is taken as one and the part used is removed. Two Steps (Word Problems) subtracts fractions of the same denominator in two goes and carries on to what is left. The 1 is replaced by a fraction of the matching denominator before anything is taken away.

Answers survive where the part used was written although what is left was asked for. Add the written answer to every fraction described as used. Fail to reach exactly one and either the wrong thing was answered or the second subtraction is missing.
One step, turning 1 into a fraction, is all that has been added, and the subtracting itself matches Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator. Triangles leaves numbers behind and begins telling shapes apart by the lengths of their sides.
