From here an overflow occurs in one column or the other, the ones or the tens. Writing that overflow as a small 1 above the next column and folding it into the sum there is repeated in four formats: the column layout, calculation done in the head, the boxed items and the word problems.

When the ones come to more than ten, the whole two-digit result gets written into the ones column. A two-digit figure standing where a single digit belongs gives it away. Worked in the head, the tens are added first and the place where the carried 1 belongs is lost.
The way of writing has not changed since No Carrying, and only one extra move, passing the overflow up a column, has been added. In 2 Carries that same move happens a second time, in the tens.
