Two-digit sums whose answers run to three digits are the center of the lesson. An overflow happens in the ones and again in the tens, and the carried 1 reaches as far as the hundreds. Once the column layout has been walked through, the same equations come round again as plain calculations, as boxed items and as word problems.

Where the tens overflow a second time and the answer grows to three digits, the 1 in the hundreds is often never written and the work simply stops. Whether a 1 stands in the hundreds place tells the two apart. The carried 1 from the ones also gets left out of the tens sum while the work moves on.
Three lessons bring 2-Digit Addition to completion. The number of carries has gone from one to two and nothing else, so the procedure is just as it was in 1 Carry. The next unit puts this same layout to work in the direction of taking away.
