This is the entrance to a three-part unit. Two stages, 2-Digit×1-Digit and 3-Digit×1-Digit, are worked by rewriting a horizontal expression into the column layout. Fill in the Blank takes up items where part of the expression has become a box, and the multiplier is still a single digit.

A boxed expression is settled by starting from the ones digit of the answer. Looking only at the product of the two ones digits and hunting for a pair whose product ends in the right digit narrows the candidates. Guess from the left-hand end of the answer alone and a figure goes in whose ones digit does not match, which shows up as a discrepancy when the multiplication is done again.
Multiplication (2-Digit, 3-Digit) begins here. In Column Calculation the multiplier grows to two digits as well, and writing the product in two rows is added.
