One mix-up can be spotted from the ones digit alone. The ones digit of a product always matches the ones digit of the two ones digits multiplied together. Copy the second row of the product straight into the answer and that digit is bound to be 0, so it fails to match.
Third lesson, and the point at which Multiplication (2-Digit, 3-Digit) is put aside. The two-row product made firm in Column Calculation turns an expression raised from a scene straight into a numerical answer.
