- Area of Composite Figures
The area of shapes assembled from several rectangles is calculated. L-Shape (Two Ways to Solve) has both solutions written, cutting the shape in two and adding, and taking the notch away from a large rectangle. T-Shape, Shapes with a Notch, Staircase Shape (3 Steps) and Cross Shape are also found by cutting or by taking away.

In L-Shape (Two Ways to Solve) the answer from adding and the answer from subtracting are bound to come to the same figure. Where they disagree, the sides of the cut rectangles were taken straight from the outer labels without the overlapping part being removed. In Staircase Shape (3 Steps) and Cross Shape too, whether the cut sides add back up to the outer length is worth checking.
What this lesson deals with are shapes made of two or three rectangles together. As far as Side Lengths and Perimeter there was one figure, and from here it is cut before anything is counted. Units of Area (cm², m², a) turns from how to find an area to the unit attached to the answer.
