- Expressions Using a Box
A scene is copied into an expression with the unknown figure left written as a box. Expressions Using a Box (Writing Addition and Subtraction) and Expressions Using a Box (Writing Multiplication and Division) bring the box on the left as often as on the right. Expressions Using a Box (Word Problems) works back from the total cost of some goods to the price of one.

Where the box sits changes the direction of working back. In a shape with the box on the side being subtracted from, the box is the largest figure of all, so the answer exceeds the figure to the right of the equals sign. Subtract there and a figure smaller than that one goes into the box. Holding a finger on the box before the pencil moves cuts down on taking the direction wrongly.
The next unit, Perpendicular and Parallel Lines, Quadrilaterals, deals with figures, yet this same stance reappears wherever an unknown length has to be found from how sides and angles stand. The rules about expressions running on from Commutative, Associative, and Distributive Laws have come round here to the expressions the child writes.
