What this worksheet covers
Decimal times whole number and decimal divided by whole number are handled in column form. The decimal point is the main stumbling block. In multiplication, children leave the point in the product where it sat in the number being multiplied. In division, the point in the quotient is not placed directly above the point in the dividend, so the answer comes out ten times or a tenth of the truth. Dropping the point in a remainder, writing 2.5 as 25, also persists.
The operations at work widen from addition and subtraction to multiplication and division of decimals. Lining up the decimal point, the foundation fixed in Adding and Subtracting Decimals, still applies exactly as it did there. Working out where the decimal point lands in a product or a quotient carries on into grade 5, when Multiplication of Decimals lets the multiplier itself be a decimal.
