What is being asked for settles the direction of the expression. The Base Amount works back to the original figure from a multiple and a whole, and Times as Many holds two quantities against each other to find how many times as large one is. Handling the Remainder (Rounding Up) and Handling the Remainder (Rounding Down) are word problems that go as far as deciding how what is left over shows in the answer.

Since The Base Amount sets a multiple and a whole side by side, their product ends up in the answer box. A base amount is always smaller than the whole, so an answer larger than any figure in the question means multiplying happened. Times as Many, for its part, will not come out evenly if the comparison is taken the wrong way round, and the answer cannot be written at all.
The next unit, Angles, moves from numbers to figures, yet since angle sizes are assembled by adding and subtracting, the stance of setting up an expression carries on. The hand arranged as a column procedure as far as 3-Digit ÷ 1-Digit is now called out from the wording of a question.
