What this worksheet covers
- Worksheet
- Subtracting Unlike Improper Fractions
From here the side being subtracted from is an improper fraction of 1 or more. The center is the shape where a common denominator is found, the numerators subtracted, and the answer turned into a mixed number, and pairs whose difference falls short of 1 and ends as a proper fraction are mixed in. Fill in the Blank takes a proper fraction from an improper one with one numerator as a gap, and the word-problem answers are mixed numbers too.
Because pairs ending as mixed numbers and pairs ending as proper fractions are jumbled together, papers fix the shape in advance and write a whole-number part beside a difference that falls short of 1. Compare, before any arithmetic, what is left of the improper fraction once 1 is taken from it against the fraction being taken away, and the shape of the answer is settled ahead of time.
This is the first lesson whose answers split into two shapes. The footing is the way of matching denominators arranged in Subtracting Proper Fractions (Unlike Denominators), and the act of subtracting does not move.
