1Word Problems
What this worksheet covers
Grade 6 (Elementary School) / Enlargement and Reduction / Scale
The lesson ties a map to actual ground. Three kinds, finding the scale as a fraction from an actual distance and a length on the map, finding an actual distance from a scale and a length on the map, and turning an actual distance into a length on the map, are all worked as word problems.
Expressions get set up that take multiplying by the denominator of the scale for dividing by it, or the reverse. Going from a length on the map to an actual length is a multiplication; coming back from an actual length to the map is a division. Settle first which of the two is wanted, then look at whether the denominator sits on the multiplying side or the dividing side of the expression.
Fitting the relation between figures onto a tool, a map, is what this lesson does, following on from Enlargement and Reduction. From here the partner becomes a collection of figures itself, and drawings leave the hand for a while.
