- Counting Pencils
A figure built out of pencils is put in front of the child, who counts how many were used. Basics keeps the number small and Advanced raises it, and nothing separates the two stages but that. No equation appears; the point is to build a routine that leaves nothing out.

As the count grows it becomes easy to lose the place where it began, so one pencil gets counted twice or missed altogether. Marking each one as it is counted, or dividing the figure into chunks and taking them in turn, brings the total out right. Counting again from another direction confirms it.
First of two lessons. Telling shapes apart came in Types of Shapes, and now the work of counting is laid on top of it. Counting Blocks changes what is counted from a flat arrangement to a stack.
