What this worksheet covers
- Worksheet
- Subtraction
Counting in tens, a way of seeing built up on the adding side, is put to work here in the direction of taking away. One multiple of ten is subtracted from another, and the answer is a multiple of ten as well. Once the recounting touch is in hand from Calculation, the same view carries through Fill in the Blank and Word Problems.

Writing 3 for 70 - 40, with the zero of the ones place gone, leads the field. Saying aloud how many tens are left before writing prevents it. Because the box in Fill in the Blank does not stand where the answer goes, the count of tens has to be traced backwards, and some children stall there.
Two lessons complete the unit. The run of raising the place value while leaving the view of number alone pauses here, and from 2-Digit ± 1-Digit onward tens and ones turn up together inside one equation.
