- Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator
The direction turns to subtracting. There are only two stages, Calculation and Word Problems, and just as in adding, the denominator is left where it is while the difference of the numerators is written in the numerator's place. Fractions with unlike denominators do not appear.

Answers turn up with the difference of the numerators alone written and the denominator dropped. Every fraction handled in this lesson is smaller than one. A single whole number sitting in the answer box means a denominator has gone missing somewhere.
While the number being taken away is a fraction, the denominator is there in the question to be seen. Once the number being subtracted from becomes 1 it can no longer be seen and has to be settled by the child. That is Subtracting a Fraction from 1.
