- Order of Operations with Whole Numbers
Two or more signs stand in one expression. Mixed Operations (3 Terms) and Multiplication with Addition and Subtraction (4 Terms) settle which sign is taken first, while Chain of Multiplication and Division (Left to Right) lines up signs of equal strength. From Calculations with Parentheses the work moves through Two Sets of Parentheses to Parentheses with Multiplication and Division (4 Terms), and only the answer is written throughout.

An expression in Two Sets of Parentheses has two places to be taken first. Items appear where only the left pair is cleared and the right is joined straight onto the outer sign. Writing out the answers to both pairs before the outer arithmetic begins makes it plain, the moment only one figure is there, that the work went on with one of them.
This opens Rules of Calculation, and all that gets settled here is the order of starting. In Commutative, Associative, and Distributive Laws the scenes where a change of order leaves the result untouched are caught hold of, and the work turns to regrouping deliberately to make things easier.
