- Area of Rectangles and Squares
Multiplying height by width to say how much ground a figure covers is the procedure built here. Area (cm², m²) and Large Areas (m², km²) set up an expression from a drawing carrying its measurements and answer it, while Area of a Square and Area of a Rectangle are word problems worked from figures inside a scene.

The drawings carry labels in two places. Answers appear where only the width label was read, the same figure multiplied by itself, and the shape treated as a square. Checking that the two figures standing in the expression box each match one of the two labels on the drawing finds the misreading.
Saying how much ground a figure covers by calculation rather than by counting squares starts with this lesson. In Side Lengths and Perimeter the same formula is used in the other direction, tracing back from an area to a side.
