- Adding 0
Nothing but sums with a zero somewhere in them are lined up here. The rule that adding zero leaves a number unchanged is checked over and over in Calculation, met as a zero inside the box in Fill in the Blank, and read in Word Problems as a situation where one side is empty, like adding an empty plate to a full one.

Since nothing is being added, children reason that the answer must be zero as well, and 7 + 0 comes out as 0 without fail. Comparing the answer against the other number settles it on the spot. Where the box takes a zero, some are uneasy that the answer does not move at all and put a different number in instead.
With this third lesson the shapes that addition takes are all in place. Subtraction up to 10 then takes the same range of numbers and thinks about them in the direction of taking away.
