- Sums up to 10
Seeing ten as a single chunk is the ability this lesson builds, using sums that reach as far as 10. It is the point at which counting on the fingers gives way to seeing a number as five and some more. Calculation fixes the pairs in memory, the box moves around from item to item in Fill in the Blank, and situations of putting together or getting more appear in Word Problems (with Pictures) and Word Problems.

Pairs that come to exactly ten, such as 6 + 4, keep producing 9 or 11 in place of 10. Switching to a procedure that makes a group of five first and then counts on the rest settles this. In Fill in the Blank, children add without looking at whether the box stands in the answer position or on the left of the equals sign.
Second of three lessons. The counting picked up in Sums up to 5 is left exactly as it was, and only the ceiling on the sum moves up to ten. The one that remains, Adding 0, handles equations with a zero on one side.
