- Ways to Compare and Units
Marks on a ruler are read, and the tape or the pencil in the picture is given a length in cm. Some objects are laid down without starting at zero, and some items ask for a difference by reading the mark at each end. No equation appears; the whole lesson is a matter of looking at the picture and the ruler.

Where a figure does not begin at the zero mark, the reading at the far end is written down just as it is. Comparing the answer with the far reading minus the near one shows this up. Starting the count from the 1 mark also survives, and the answer comes out 1 cm short.
Work on length starts here. The stance cultivated in Comparing Length, of lining up the ends before measuring anything against anything, is put to use again, this time on top of a tool. In Units (cm and mm) a single mark on that tool is given a name.
