- Subtraction (Different Units)
A length set down as a large unit paired with a small one, 2 m 40 cm for instance, has another length taken from it. Like unit against like unit is the basic shape. Bare equations and word problems about lengths being cut away both walk through that way of writing.

Before anything is subtracted, the like units need to be paired off. Let that slip and mm is taken from cm, and the unit of the answer no longer matches the question. Where only the length being subtracted from carries a small-side figure, that figure gets left out of the answer.
Two units or one, working through place by place is the routine already held from Subtraction (Same Units). Length (cm, mm, m) has one lesson left, Subtraction (With Borrowing), where breaking the large side apart is added on.
