A weight of 1000 g is exactly 1 kg. The conversions run on that one relation alone, gathering a weight written in g up onto the kg side, or unpacking a weight written in kg and g into a figure in g alone. Shapes that leave something over, such as g→kg, g, are among them.

A weight that a thousand will not divide evenly brings the hand to a halt when it has to be written in kg by itself. No decimal point appears in any answer in this lesson. A weight with something left over is written in the g→kg, g shape, split across kg and g. A decimal point showing up in an answer means a later way of writing has been borrowed early.
The only clue is the single figure of a thousand. In Units (t) that same thousand goes to work between t and kg, and only the size of the weights involved leaps upward.
