- Division of Decimals with Remainders
From here the column layout meets expressions that will not come out evenly. 1 Decimal Place (Column Calculation) carries the quotient as far as the tenths and 2 Decimal Places (Column Calculation) as far as the hundredths, and whatever is left at that point is written as a remainder. The boxed items and the word problems are solved under the same stopping rule.

The place to which a quotient runs is fixed in advance in this lesson. Answers appear where zeros were supplied and the working carried on further, leaving the remainder box empty. A quotient of one decimal digit for 1 Decimal Place (Column Calculation) and two for 2 Decimal Places (Column Calculation) is where the work stops, so whether the remainder box has been filled is the thing to look at.
Every expression dealt with in Decimal ÷ Whole Number (Basics) came out evenly in the end. This lesson stops at a chosen place and writes the rest as a remainder. Extending Division Into Decimals supplies zeros to that rest and carries on.
