- Decimal × Whole Number (Calculations)
The procedure for deciding where the point goes in a product is made firm in the column layout. Alongside column items multiplying numbers with one, two and three decimal places by a single-digit whole number, and by a two-digit one, the same range is solved horizontally and items appear with a figure inside the expression replaced by a box.
A product written in the column layout, before its trailing zeros are cleared, carries as many decimal places as the number being multiplied. The multiplier is a whole number, which is why. Skip that count and put the point where it looks to sit under the point above, and it slides whenever a carry adds a digit to the product. Comparing how many figures stand to the right of each point is the quickest way.
As the entrance to this unit, only the bare form of the calculation is dealt with. Decimal × Whole Number (Word Problems) uses the same column layout inside a scene and starts from setting up the expression.
