- Mixed Addition and Subtraction
Addition and subtraction share one expression. Three-term calculations without parentheses stand beside calculations that gather what is inside the parentheses before moving outside, and both leave the stages from the common denominator to the answer written out and joined by equals signs. Fill in the Blank uses an expression without parentheses and turns one numerator into a gap, while the word problems have the child set up the expression.

In an expression without parentheses, where an addition follows a subtraction, the two on the right get made into one and then subtracted. Since the intermediate lines survive joined by equals signs, a line where the second and third became one although the expression carries no parentheses means the order has been reversed. Asking simply where the parentheses are is enough to stop the hand.
What grows is the kinds of operation and the parentheses, and settling the common denominator runs as it did in Subtracting 3 Fractions. In Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Decimals the partners standing in an expression are no longer fractions alone.
