- Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Decimals
A fraction and a decimal appear inside one expression at the same time. The decimal is turned into a fraction and a common denominator found, in both an adding shape and a subtracting shape, and the answer is written as a simplified fraction or a mixed number. The subtracting shape includes expressions taking a decimal from a mixed number with a borrow, and the word-problem answers are matched to fraction form as well.

The direction of the matching is fixed: the decimal becomes a fraction. Try it the other way and some denominators will not divide evenly, the arithmetic halts, and an answer rounded partway differs slightly from the true fraction. A decimal written in the answer box means the direction was reversed.
In the next unit, Average, fractions are left behind and one figure standing for several is found. The procedure of matching denominators before moving numerators has been used to the last, its shape unchanged, as far as Mixed Addition and Subtraction.
