- Adding Mixed Numbers (Unlike Denominators)
The numbers before the adding gain a whole-number part. Mixed number added to mixed number, and mixed number added to proper fraction, are handled as Calculation, both where the fraction parts fall short of 1 and where they pass 1 and carry into the whole-number part. What becomes the gap in Fill in the Blank is the numerator on the proper-fraction side.

Papers are mixed in where finding the common denominator multiplied the whole-number part by the same figure too. The whole-number part of an answer can only be the sum of the two whole-number parts, or that sum plus 1. Stray from there and the common denominator has reached the whole numbers.
Tidying into mixed-number form was gained in Adding Improper Fractions just before. Here it turns up both before and after the arithmetic. Raising the expression out of a piece of writing comes in Adding Fractions (Word Problems and Applications).
