Adding Fractions (Unlike Denominators) worksheets for Grade 5 (Elementary School)

What this unit covers

The procedure of finding a common denominator and then adding the numerators is built up through proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers. Mixed numbers that carry, Fill in the Blank and sums of three fractions are covered, and the word problems include denominators in a multiple relationship and sums that come out as mixed numbers.

Adding the denominators as they stand, so that 1/2 + 1/3 becomes 2/5, is the most frequent error. With mixed numbers, children add only the whole-number parts and leave the fractions alone, or fail to carry when the fraction part of the sum turns improper. Answers left unsimplified stand out as well.
