- Subtracting Mixed Numbers (Unlike Denominators)
No word problems are set, and the way of subtracting a mixed number is made firm through Calculation and Fill in the Blank alone. The partner is a mixed number in some expressions and a proper fraction in others, and each comes with pairs whose fraction parts subtract as they stand and pairs that break 1 out of the whole-number part. Fill in the Blank uses expressions needing no break, with the gap on the proper fraction being taken away.

Where the fraction parts will not subtract as they stand, the answer keeps a whole-number part one smaller than the two whole numbers' difference. An answer that still carries that 1 has skipped the borrowing and written the fraction part in the shape of the smaller minus the larger.
In Subtracting Fractions (Word Problems and Applications) the subtraction shown until now as an expression gets raised out of the wording instead. Expressions carrying a whole-number part appear inside the writing just as they are.
