What this worksheet covers
Subtraction with unlike denominators moves from proper fractions to improper fractions and mixed numbers, including the cases that borrow. Three fractions subtracted in a row, mixed addition and subtraction with parentheses, and adding or subtracting a decimal and a fraction are lined up, while the word problems cover finding a difference and working backward.

Borrowing with mixed numbers, taking 1 from the whole-number part and then forgetting to add the denominator to the numerator, is the standard error. In mixed operations, when a subtraction stands in front of the parentheses, children add the second term inside as well, and the answer comes out larger by twice that term.
The common-denominator procedure settled in Adding Fractions (Unlike Denominators) is put to a new use here: subtraction and mixed addition and subtraction. Having completed both addition and subtraction, this study of fractions moves on in grade 6, when Multiplication of Fractions opens up multiplication and division as new operations.
