- Distance and Route
The length measured straight from a house to a school and the length walked along the roads are two different things. Reading a Map has the route followed by eye, and U-Shaped Map has the lengths of a bent road totalled. Shapes that set up an expression without a map, km (Word Problems) and m (Word Problems), stand in this lesson too.

Following a map means cutting the route into legs at each corner and counting them. Miss one leg and the answer falls short by exactly that leg. Where a return trip is asked for, whether the one-way total was doubled is another thing to watch, since forgetting to double leaves the answer at half.
Length (km and Tape Measure) closes here. What this lesson does is take the calculating made firm as far as Subtraction and use it again on a new material, a map. Restating units and calculating both go to work together inside it.
