- Measuring Length with a Tape Measure
A tape measure is laid against something and its scale read. It is the tool for lengths a ruler cannot reach, and answers come either in cm alone or in the pair m and cm. No arithmetic appears; the lesson stays with reading a figure off the tool as it lies.

This tool carries its marks well past 1 m. In the shape answered with two units, only the cm side gets read and written, and the m figure drops out. Looking across the answers to that shape alone, and hunting for any without an m written in, gathers the losses together.
Units (km, m) moves away from the tool, and restating one figure for a length as another becomes the center. The length pulled off the marks here is the material for that. Being able to read it first is where this unit starts.
