On the footing of how many m make 1 km, restating a length is repeated in four directions. km→m and m→km shift the unit one step each way, while m→km, m and km, m→m move between a length written in two units and a single gathered figure. Every item is a conversion.

In the m→km, m shape, the three digits at the right-hand end of the original figure become the m side and whatever is left to the left of them becomes the km. Cut in the middle of the digits instead and the m side comes out shrunken. Holding the m in the answer against the last three digits of the original fixes where the cut went wrong.
Measuring Length with a Tape Measure pulled a figure off the marks; from here that figure alone is looked at and restated. The tool has left the hand, and the only clue is how the units stand to one another.
