Two lengths carrying the same unit are added, cm with cm and m with m, and the answer takes that same unit. Bare equations trace the procedure first, and the word problems then read scenes in which lengths are joined end to end or put together.

The first thing to check is whether the unit on the answer is the unit of the problem. An equation in m answered in cm is caught by that alone. Among the word problems, a request for a combined length gets answered with a difference, leaving a result shorter than the longer of the two originals.
Three lessons on units are behind, and arithmetic with lengths begins. Because the units on both sides agree, addition as already learned passes straight through. Addition (Different Units) is where that assumption gives way.
