- Addition (Different Units)
At least one of the two lengths is written in a pair of units. Pairs such as m with cm, or cm with mm, mean the large side is added to the large side and the small side to the small side. Bare equations appear, the same shapes turn up in word problems that describe a scene, and everything is kept inside a range where nothing overflows.

Adding across the divide, and setting the cm figure and the mm figure down as one number, is the error to look for. A small side that has passed ten, or a hundred, is the mark of it. Where one of the lengths carries no small-side figure, the large sides alone get added and the work ends there.
Only the way the two lengths are written has changed; adding each side to its own kind is the routine held over from Addition (Same Units). These two lessons settle the adding, and in Addition (With Carrying) the small side runs over.
