The large side gives up 1 cm or 1 m, which is passed down to the small side as 10 mm or 100 cm. Every item resists being done on the small side alone, and the shapes appear in bare equations and word problems alike.

The 10 mm or 100 cm that were broken off get added to the length being taken away rather than the one being taken from. The result comes out shorter than it should, so holding it against the original catches it. Even where the direction is right, the step of reducing the large side by one goes missing.
One point separates this from Subtraction (Different Units): whether the small side can manage on its own. Here the large side has to be broken into, and with that the nine lessons of Length (cm, mm, m) are all in place.
