- Addition (No Carrying)
Two kinds of item make up the whole lesson: boxed ones in which a missing number has to be hunted down, and word problems that turn a scene into an equation. A two-digit or three-digit number is added to a three-digit one, and every equation is arranged so that no column ever carries.

Since the places do not affect one another, only the place holding the box needs looking at. Children survey all three digits instead, copy the hundreds digit into a box meant for a two-digit number, and write a three-digit number in. Settling beforehand, from the other side of the equation, how many digits the box can hold takes the hesitation away.
This is the way into 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction. Lining the places up and adding from the right is the routine of 2-Digit Addition, with one more digit in play. Addition (1 Carry) brings the sending operation back.
