Seeing the figures loose from the units they belong to, children add the dL figure into the L figure. When the L in the answer exceeds what the two original L figures come to, that is the mark of it.
Adding quantities written in a pair of units is now covered from end to end. From Addition (With Carrying) the total on the small side passes its limit and has to be sent up to the larger unit.
