- Ways to Compare and Units
Three routes lead from a quantity of water to a number: counting how many containerfuls it makes, totalling up how many marks have been gathered, and reading straight off the figure a mark points to, which are Measuring Capacity (Counting Containers), Measuring Capacity (Total on the Scale) and Measuring Capacity (Reading the Scale). No equation appears; everything is counted or read inside a picture.

Whether the answer is a count of containers or a count of marks causes hesitation. In the totalling items, either the full cups or the leftover marks alone get written down, and whether both L and dL appear in the answer tells them apart. In the reading items an answer counted downward from the top, the reverse of the water present, also survives.
This is the way into capacity. Comparing by Pouring in Comparing Capacity only picked out the larger of two, and from here a quantity is said with a figure and a unit. Units (L, dL, mL) then joins those units to one another.
